James R. Reed, Founder and Managing Member

As founder of Nautilus Housing, LLC and Nautilus Affordable Housing, LLC, Mr. Reed has created a family of companies dedicated to excellence in affordable, mixed-finance, and work force housing. His leadership informs both our vision to be the most trusted, cost effective, and innovative housing provider in the nation and our mission to create high-quality and well-managed housing that enhances the lives of our residents and enriches communities. Our Mission is to preserve and steward affordable rental housing, and to provide stability, hope and economic security to low-and moderate-income seniors and families.

Jim was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a few years after graduation moved to Newport Beach, California.

Mr. Reed has been in Real Estate Advisory and Investments since 1989. To date he has been involved in over 15,732 rental units and transactions valued in excess of $1.5 Billion. Today, the Nautilus Group is focused on becoming one of the nation’s top-ranked private sector owners of affordable housing, and most active affordable housing developers in the country.

Within Nautilus, Mr. Reed has created a culture that embraces innovation, trust, financial stewardship, long-term responsible ownership, and entrepreneurial spirit. He has tapped experienced professionals from the private and public sectors to partner with and to serve as his executive leadership team. His team is empowered to drive business opportunities, make decisions, and innovate the way in which we do business.

Charitable involvements include: Project Access, Inc., New Directions for Women, 1st Step House of Orange County, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, Share Our Selves, Cystinosis Research Foundation and High Hopes Head Injury Program. Founded and served as Chairman of two charity golf tournaments: Project Access – 8 years and New Directions for Women -14 years; and Chaired 1st Step House of Orange County for 6 years.

Derek Guizado, SVP and General Counsel

Derek Guizado joined Nautilus Affordable Housing in 2018 with five years of experience as a litigation and transactional attorney. He began his career litigating complex employment matters before transitioning to a role as a trusted advisor on corporate business transactions. He also has governmental relations expertise, having served as a Law Fellow in the office of Senator John Kerry while in law school.

Mr. Guizado is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center and Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business. He is also a member of the California Bar.

Luis Flores-Damian, Operations & Research Manager

Key Roles: Responsible for overseeing all of Nautilus’ daily operations, including database research, development, and design, information resources, marketing oversight, and personnel. Over 9 years’ experience with sister companies in aforementioned key roles. Received Bachelor’s degree from California State University, Fullerton in Communications, with specialization in social media.
